Greetings all.
Mountain conditions in the Valhalla's were good over the last
four days. Blue bird days with a westerly flow, lows of 27c, mid day highs of 35
c. The south aspects have only a few snow patches remaining in the
alpine the north aspects still have a fair bit of snow on them that is
melting fast and Mulvey Lake is still ice covered with snow.
Traveling conditions are excellent on firm snow with boot
top foot pen even late in the day. The small pocket glacier on the north side of
Gimli has 1.5 - 2 m of snow pack on it and there are no visible
holes. There were numerous recent class two slab avalanches that had
pulled out below glide cracks on 30 - 40 degree rock slabs in the alpine, all
aspects.
The low end 5th class rock routes on Gimli, Asgard, Midguard
and the Wolf's Ears are dry for the most part with some snow patches melting out
in the lower 4th class terrain.
The mid and upper 5th class rock routes are bone dry and in
great shape, ice axe and crampons are no longer needed to descend the
normal decent route on Mt Gimli.
The black fly's were as extreme as the heat. The
logging road in is active and the last half of the road is one lane and can
be very dangerous if you meet a truck, the road has a few blind hills with
no pull outs, head up before 7:00 am or after 4:30 pm and tune in the local
logging radio channel posted at the highway.
Enjoy, Cheers.
