During some heli-supported ski touring on the high neves of the Howsons,
we observed still very good snow coverage above 1400 m. Few crevasses
are showing and there are few sags. Some couloirs have slid to ice. We
measured 190 cm of snow at 1800 m on the South Telkwa Glacier. It was
warm (7 degrees in 2200 m Kitnayakwa Pass at 1400 hrs) with no overnight
freeze and melting was rapid with creeks large and fast. The snow is
getting sun-cupped and wet, but ski and foot penetration are minimal.
Getting onto the neve of the Burnie Glacier is still straightforward,
but will not remain so long.
