Monashee Mountains - Gorge Road -
Dec.19-07
Spent the day up the Gorge Road West of Revelstoke in the Monashee Mountains – a mostly treeline and
below type of terrain – which was handy on such a snowy day as today.
80 to 100 cm. of snow over the Dec. 4 crust – the recent
storm snows are now settling (stiffening) into more of a slab and today was the
first day in a while where I could ski cut steep features and trigger a slab –
seemed to be releasing in the storm snow down 20-30 cm. and not on the crust
(so far). I think this change in slab character is a significant change over
the snow conditions of the last week – so I was a lot more wary of slope
incline today and avoided steeper terrain especially slopes that were rolling
over (convex)
Moderate to Strong winds on the ridgecrests out of the SW forming
deep deposits on lee features. It snowed 1-2cm/hr until late in the day when
there was a break in the weather with a few sucker holes of blue sky. Temps
stayed cool up high but the morning snow in Revy had changed to mixed rain and
snow by the PM.
There is active logging up this road so do not travel there
without a radio.
