Climbed Mt Athabasca yesterday with a group of 24 via AA col.
Generally good conditions for travel on ascent. At higher elevations
the HN from last week has formed a MF crust which is presently punchy
and a bit hard walking on descent with boot top to shin foot penetration.
The gullies on the AA col have seen some snowballing and surface
sluffs with more to come when it warms again!
Good coverage on glaciers with above normal amounts of snow. We still
had a good (but breakable) crust on glacier right down to toe but it
was a cool unsettled day. Another week of warm weather should create
a stronger crust and settle out the snowpack a bit more. Make travel
a bit easier for the descents.
Certainly lots more snow in the gullies to avalanche yet when things warm up.
