Bugaboos June 29th - July 6th.
Weather:
We arrived during the last 2 days of a heat wave with +20 at Applebee. The week brought showery unsettled weather with afternoon thunderstorms or just short squalls and light hail as well as the odd sunny break. Temperatures dropped through out the week and remained cool.
Avalanches:
Some dirty point releases (which included rocks) to size 1 from the Kain route towards the Bugaboo/Snowpatch col slope. These occurred during heavy rain showers. Some bigger avalanches were noticed across the valley towards Anniversary Peak to size 2.5. These were at lower elevations and also brown and out of rocky terrain. Some cornice failures were observed from the top of the East Face of Snowpatch as well as East Face of Bugaboo but most were gone by the time we left. Rock fall was also observed off the E face of Bugaboo and Snowpatch.
Glacier Travel:
Excellent conditions were observed with fast easy travel up and down (glissading) the Bug/SnowPtch Col. A 'stair case' so to speak. Some isothermal conditions with post holing around rocky areas and Applebee is now clear of snow.
Rock: Crescent Spire: Dry Donkeys Ears: Dry Snowpatch: E Face of Snowpatch had many wet streaks including N face 'sunshine route'. Tom Egan was dry. West Face had many wet streaks, almost on every route off the North Summit. Bugaboo: NE ridge Bugaboo had yet to see an ascent but looked in good condition, Kain route had a few minor snow patches and saw several attempts but it is unknown whether it saw an ascent. Pigeon: Saw at least one ascent and looked in good condition. Note: Photos were taken at the beginning of the week and many snowpatches high on the peaks were gone by the time we left.
