Summary of Fryatt valley Aug 11-14.
10cm of new snow fell in the alpine on Aug 10, mainly above 2500m, rapidly
melted the following days with sluffing on steep slopes. Climbed Mt Olympus
NW coulouir (Aug 12) and Mt Parnassus SE coulouir (Aug 13). Both routes in
good condition with boot top penetration. Nights were warm yet rocks
remained slippery where shaded. All main gullies remained
uncharacteristicly snowy for this time of year but expect moist snow by
late a.m.. A few large cornices were still present and melting down fast.
Some significant avalanche activity was noted off steep sun affected alpine
slopes and one large ice fall was "heard".
Hotter temperatures are forecasted for the next few days so one should
expect increased sluffing in gullies, snow slopes, weakening bridges over
bergschrunds, and possible failure of remaining cornices. Be in and out of
snow filled gullies early. These temperatures will help to further dry out
the rocks.
Observed N face of Mt belanger on Aug 14 (see att), looking dirty with some
residual snow pockets hanging in mid-face.
