Went up Rice Brook via Bush River on the 10th of August. Intermittent
showers while walking in, getting the bush and tall grass on the
decommissioned road good and wet. Crossing Rice Brook was tricky, after all
the precip. We camped on a spur road leading to the where the second bridge
used to be. A fairly recent (last fall) wash-out from the climbers left
gully on the approach to the south face route bulldozed the alder, making
access to the gully easy.
On the 11th of August the showers turned into steady rain and we hiked to
Cinema Lake at Thompson Pass. While we were busy wringing out socks and
pouring water from our boots, the storm put a substantial amount of snow on
the upper mountain. With a NW flow and clouds clinging to the mountain, we
left the following day. Pictures were taken on the way out on the 12th.
Road: The road to the Rice Brook turn-off is in good condition. It gets a
bit rougher, but still good for a regular car up the switchbacks past that.
The road past the cutblock, wrapping around the ridge into Rice Brook has
been opened and can be used to about km6, but it is rough with waterbars.
Good ground clearance is recommended for that section. All the bridges in
Rice Brook have been removed.
