Climbed in Johnston Canyon, upper falls yesterday. The lower angled ice on the shield is starting to get sun bleached and rotting but there are still two good lines going at grade two and three.
One of the pillars on the left wall is touching down and is a 35m grade five. Careful placement of your belayer is essential as either side of the pillar is threatened by free-hanging unsupported daggers of ice weighing tonnes. Scary place to be in changing temperatures.
We shared the venue with two other groups of climbers and it worked well sharing ropes and rotating through the climbs.
