Cool temperatures with mixed showery weather this weekend on the
Wapta. A starry night and a few hours of sunshine early this morning
made for fantastic spring skiing conditions in the alpine -- about as
good as it gets.
This glory comes at a price, however. Travel from the parking lot to
about 2200m is rugged. Plan on carrying your skis right from the
parking lot, through patches of mud and isothermal snow, etc., all the
way to the flats before the final headwall below the hut. The upper
canyon is clear of snow and raging now, so access until next winter is
via the summer route.
If you don't like the idea of crossing the creek over the chockstone
you can continue up the stairs and follow the trail a couple hundred
meters to the flats above the lower canyon where good snow bridges
allow easy travel over the creek to the trail above the upper canyon.
It was snowing lightly when we left the parking lot at 1pm.
