ACMG Mountain Conditions Report Summary for the Rockies and Columbia Mountains issued June 07,2012
The big story with mountain conditions for both the Rockies and Columbias right now is high water and flooding. Heavy rainfall on the 5th and 6th of June caused rapid run-off and flash flooding and most rivers breached their banks. The temperatures cooled overnight on the 6th, and the snowline dropped down to around 2000 metres, but another strong storm is forecasted for the weekend with another 20-40mm of rain possible Friday and Saturday. Many trails are washed out and several bridges were compromised or washed away with the high water, so some approaches may not be passable. Banks are undercut and unstable and the water is still running at flood levels with lots of debris so fording of even the smaller creeks will be very hazardous.
The conditions in the alpine will be suspect with the saturated snowpack insulated with a little fresh snow, and more rain forecast. It is not the weekend to be on a big face or under the lingering massive cornices. Wet avalanches on steeper terrain are a real possibility. If the temperatures stay cool enough, precipitation may be in the form of snow at the highest elevations, so a wintery ascent of a ridge route could be a consideration.
The lower elevation crags dried out today in the sun, and may again dry out with showery weather forecast on Sunday. Be prepared for some intersting approaches with new stream channels gouged out all over the place.
Kayaking is a good option if you can dodge the debris.
