While riding on Stoney Trail (between Jewel downhill and Skogan climb) a mother
griz and 2 cubs sighted at close range (50m). The cubs ran away while mom stood
and watched us (2 people) retreat quietly. We regrouped with 2 others after
retreating 400m back on the trail, waited 5 minutes, then rode past the
location as a noisy group of 4. The bears were not seen at this time. The
location was on the section of trail approximately 4km north of the Nakiska
road, where the otherwise open trail makes a short sidetrip through trees and
lush vegetation.
** Note: The lead rider was making frequent loud yells to avoid surprising
bears around blind corners. This bears reaction (curiousity, no aggression)
when sighted indicated to us that she had heard the yells and thus was not
agitated when we arrived. **
