Just got out from a night in at the Vantange col at the head of Cerise Creek and another night up on the Spearhead Blackcomb col. Cerise Creek: There is snow once you enter the forest on the summer trail. Little bits of the trail are showing through and it is melting fast. It is all snow after the creek crossing below the N face of Joffre. There was about 10cm of newer snow up at the Cerise/TwinOne pass. There are still lots of snow at the cabin and several meters of snow on the glacier higher up. Spearhead: We walked over and climbed Blackcomb from the Horstman hut, spent the night and walked down via Body bag bowl. Above 2200m There was 30-40cm of new snow (from last 5-7 days) that was already slushy/isothermic. We saw several sz 2.5 avalanches in this new snow from the previous 3 days. There was a freeze last night, but not enough to support body weight, and we made sure we were away from anything steep by late morning. Yesterday afternoon we started a good size 1.5 avalanche in the Blowhole on Blackcomb Glacier by throwing a snowball in there. There was a size 3 slide that came out of Disease Ridge within the last week or two leaving a crown up to 3 meters high in places. It slid to ground and the debris reached the flats at the level of Blackcomb Lake. The Blackcomb Buttress lines all looked bare of snow, but lots of snow getting to them. The bodybag bowl descent won't work for very much longer, the rocks are starting to poke through. You can still ski easily from the top of 7th heaven to the bottom of the lift via several different lines. We saw 6 bears in 4 days and none of them showed any fear of us including mama and a cub.
