[MCR] Widespread Natural Avalanche Cycle in Banff/Yoho Kootenay

Subject: [MCR] Widespread Natural Avalanche Cycle in Banff/Yoho Kootenay

A Parks Canada helicopter flight over Sunshine and Lake Louise today showed a wide spread avalanche cycle is currently happening. Numerous size 1.5's to size 3's were observed at the alpine and treeline elevations. In addition a number of smaller avalanches were observed in thick timber in the Sunshine area. The average crown depth was 40 cm and the sliding layer was the Feb 12 surface hoar. In addition to the natural activity there has been 8 reported skier triggered avalanches throughout the region in the past 48 hours.

This surface hoar problem will continue for some time into the future. Now is the time for very conservative decision making.
