ACMG Mountain Conditions Report Summary for the Rockies and Columbia Mountains issued July 26, 2012

Dare I say that summer is here and it looks like it isn?t going anywhere for at least the forecast period.

Apart from some very unsettled weather last week, it has been about as warm as it gets in these part for a couple of weeks now. A tremendous amount of snow has melted and conditions are starting to catch up to norms for this part of July.

In general, glaciers are staring to show signs of crevasses opening and some of the more traditional cruxes, like the Bugaboo ? Snowpatch col, however still in good shape, are starting to change. These changes could continue to be quite rapid in these warm temperatures and don?t be surprised to see significant differences from day to day.

All of this warm weather and the relatively large amount of snow left in the alpine has the creeks and rivers flowing at still very high levels for this time of year and it is important to remember that some of the trail systems in the provincial and national parks are still out commission due to high water levels and bridge washouts.

The higher, shady rock climbs like the north face of Temple and parts of the west face of the Howser Towers are likely to still have some snow, ice and wet sections but otherwise, most alpine routes in the Rockies and Columbias should be in pretty good shape with all the usual cautions. These warm temps make for short freezes so; rock-fall, cornices and avalanches should still be on your mind when traveling under any significant terrain.

Although not in the forecast, after seeing some of the impressively violent storms roll through the mountain last week, I will be keeping a keen eye on cloud formation and will be ready to run at the first sign of thunderheads building.

I hope you all have an opportunity to take advantage of this beautiful forecast.
