ACMG Mountain Conditions Report Summary for the Rockies and Columbia Mountains issued 08/30/2012

It?s starting to feel like that time of year again. The days are starting to get shorter and the nights cooler. The forecast however, still looks like summer and good weather ahead so I am confident that this long weekend will see lots of people making the most of terrific conditions!
Not a great deal has changed again since last weeks report, other then some new precipitation. Now with the cooler nights, rain in town will mean and has meant snow in the mountains. How long the snow lingers really depends on the daytime temps and solar radiation, so be prepared if heading into the hills following a rain that you will hit a snow line that could make travel more challenging. Fresh snow on bare glaciers can really hide crevasses, and some of the well-traveled routes might feel like a whole new adventure under 10 plus cm?s of fresh snow.
The cool evenings could also make many objectives more reasonable with good overnight freezes, but be aware that as the sun hits, with the new snow, that melting can definitely reawaken the old hazards of rockfall.
Reports from the Bugaboos still indicate excellent travel for this time of year on the glaciers and on the Bugaboo/Snowpatch col, and it seems that the Rogers Pass area too continues to recover quickly after the recent precipitation events.
The Lake Louise group only saw about 10 cm up high and one could still expect some verglass or snow on shady aspects.
Overall, the week ahead looks pretty stellar weather wise. Keep in mind though that things change, the weather man is not always right. Always keep an eye on the sky for yourself, and be aware that the days are getting shorter and the nights cooler, so time your ascents with that in mind!
Have an awesome long weekend!
