ACMG Mountain Conditions Report Summary for the Rockies and Columbia Mountains issued August 22, 2013

Conditions across the forecast area continue to be generally good with a marked decrease in afternoon thunderstorms and increasingly cooler overnight temperatures.

The forecast for all but the western edge of the Columbia Mountains looks reasonably stable for the weekend. There are currently no thunderstorms forecast but planning to be off the peaks early is still a good idea.

The warm overnight temperatures of last week meant that many parties were turned around due to rockfall and avalanche potential. It looks like temperatures are trending colder and will be more fall like with reasonably cold nights but still warm days if it is sunny.

Snowline has crept up quite high now which has made some ridges quite icy and difficult as well as having exposed quite a bit of loose rock on some slopes. There have been several reports of significant rockfall in the Bugaboos and the Bugaboo ? Snowpatch Col is becoming challenging to manage safely with both natural and human generated rockfall.

Glacier travel is generally good with crevasses open and obvious bridges.

In terms of objectives, many of the big rock climbs in the Rockies, Purcells and Columbias are still in great shape and it will be good to get them done before the first dusting of snow arrives.

Lots of the snow and ice objectives around the Columba Icefields are also in great shape but be prepared to have your crampons on for a good part of the day.

Have a great weekend.
