ACMG Mountain Conditions Report Summary for the Rockies and Columbia Mountains issued 08/29/2013

Its hard to believe that August is coming to a close, but luckily conditions in the mountains have still been highly favourable for this time of year.

The usual benefits and concerns of late summer are prevalent in all areas. The benefits being that most of the peaks are quite dry, have high firn lines, are well travelled and we are getting more consistent over night freezes.
The concerns are that with any new precipitation, glacier travel will become more interesting, with thin layers of new snow hiding all the holes, higher peaks will take a couple days to clear off to become easily climbable again, daylight hours are shorter and there is still that risk of thundershowers.

This past week, most of our main areas such as Rogers Pass, Bugaboos and Lake Louise have been dry and in good shape. Bare ice, and bare rock have made for relatively fast travel. There still are bear restrictions for many areas, so please adhere to these for the sake of your party and the future of our wildlife.

Bigger peaks not only are getting snow when it rains down low, but are holding on to the new snow a bit longer. Robson saw a good window with some lucky summiters, and may again, but recently had another new snowfall accumulation.

The forecast for Friday at minimum is rain with risk of thundershowers in most of our mountain range. After this event, more sun is on the way, so being patient, and letting things settle out after the new precipitation might save you some energy!

As always, start early, look for the over night freeze, bring a headlamp and heads up for the thunderstorms...or just go rock climbing:)

Happy September,

Sarah Hueniken
