Hello All,
Recent storm activity in the vicinity of Blue River has changed conditions recently. Storm snow that has fallen since the deep freeze of last week now amounts to 55cm at 1200 meters elevation and about 80 cm at 1600 meters.  This storm snow changed from low density to heavier stuff by Saturday. Over Saturday, many steep banks ran as soft slabs on the well developed Dec 10th Surface Hoar. This layer is very prominent and easy to find in the top 75 cm of storm snow. Total snow cover is 145 cm at low elevations and 180cm closer to treeline. When I stepped off my skis yesterday, my feet sunk in 75 cm! Also of note is that the slide alders are laying down under the weight of the new snow and so the low elevation surfaces are getting smoother. Rocks are all covered and obstacles are filling in nicely .
I advise caution with this new storm layer as it is likely to form up into a slab that could lead to human triggered avalanches on all aspects and elevations.
All the Best,
Steve Ludwig
