ACMG Mountain Conditions Report Summary for the Rockies and Columbia Mountains issued July 10th, 2014

Summer is here! The mountains are green where they are supposed to be green and it is hot! Trails and approaches are mostly open, rock is mostly dry and the BC slidepaths are mostly full of alder once again.

Snow remains most places above treeline along the Rockies and Columbia's divides and with the heat turned up during the day and the nights so short, it is anyone's guess as to how the overnight freezes will go. Have a Plan B.

Many of the big alpine rock faces are probably climbable now but the heat is causing what is likely the biggest current hazards-loose wet slides, rockfall and cornice failures. Be very conscious of what is happening above you if are alpineering.

Glacier snow cover is getting thinner and more variable and it will get a little trickier as the heat continues. Use the usual precautions and keep em tight if walking through the slush in crevasse country.

Drink lots of water, hide in the shade but mostly get out there and enjoy the heat. If anyone complains that it is too hot-remind them of early February!
