ACMG Mountain Conditions Report Summary for the Rockies and Columbia Mountains issued Aug 1, 2014

The alpine conditions in the Rockies and the Interior will be next to perfect this coming long weekend. The two main concerns for mountaineers will be thunder showers and rock-fall in both mountain ranges.

The front range climbs in the Rockies are predominantly bone dry and in perfect summer condition. Recent guided and recreational ascents on Mt. Louis and Eisenhower Tower confirm this. Peaks in the Louise group are also in prime condition, with the caveat that icy faces like Lefroy get raked with rock-fall in the heat of the day. Classic ridge features like Victoria are in good condition and less susceptible to rock-fall.

Similar conditions exist in the interior. The Bugaboos are reported to be in near perfect shape. The Bugaboo-Snowpatch col is still passable with snow from top to bottom (a few icy steps here and there). However, rock-fall is still something to keep in mind during the warmest part of the day. And like most other years, this feature (and others like it) tends to deteriorate as the summer progresses.

Rogers Pass is comparable again with most of the classics being dry and in great condition.

In summary, this weekend will be warm, and subsequently alpine North faces will come alive with rock-fall. Classic ridge climbs will have much less of this and provided you are down before the afternoon thunder showers, are generally in fine shape. Stay safe.
