ACMG Mountain Conditions Report Summary for the Rockies and Columbia Mountains issued April 30th, 2015
Not really much change in the past week. The snow line continues to slowly migrate up hill and the past couple of days saw some limited rain most places and some scattered snow fall in the interior.
Alpine conditions, avalanche hazard, cornice falls, glacier travel etc are still, most importantly, dependent on temperatures and overnight freezes. Snow and ice routes and Skiing are still potentially good on the big icefields and around treeline along the divides of the Rockies and Columbia Mountains.
As a gross generalization, as you get farther away from the big icefields, the green line is well up into the treeline. Away from the alpine, ice climbing is mostly gone. Some chunks of water ice were still hanging in yesterday in Field but none of them looked even remotely like a good idea to climb.
Places like the Ghost River, Yamnuska, Victor Lake wall etc would be in great climbing shape if they get enough sun to dry out. North faces like Ha Ling and alpine venues like Mt Louis, Rogers Pass, Bugaboos etc will still have snow issues on route or hanging above the routes for awhile yet.
The dry ranges should be in pretty good scrambling shape but some snow and ice may still be lurking in the shade and the ticks will be out in force.
