Climbed the West Face of Mt Lefroy today (June 24th).
A very good overnight freeze made for excellent climbing conditions this morning on the West Face of Mt. Lefroy. Crampons were necessary both on ascent and descent, and boot penetration was generally minimal. The West Face is almost entirely snow covered, but a few isolated sections of bare ice are present which could be used to build ice-screw belays in a couple of spots if desired. Rockfall was minimal on Mt Lefroy while the West Face was in shadow, but several rockfall events and some isolated loose wet avalanches were observed on the East Face of Mt. Victoria beginning as soon as the sun touched the slopes in the early morning. We also heard several serac failures through the day on both Victoria and Lefroy.
See attached photos of Lefroy and Victoria.
