ACMG Mountain Conditions Report Summary for the Rockies and Columbia Mountains issued

Little has changed in the Rockies and Columbia mountains this past week. There have been ascents of Athabasca (Ramp route) and Andromeda (Middle Earth), reporting decent travel conditions. The standout point from the reports has been thin snow bridges over crevasses and bergschrunds. A probe or ski pole seems to be a good idea right now if you are wandering around on the ice to avoid falling through a trap door. There was 70 to 125cm of snow on the ramp route of Athabasca (above 2800m) with no avalanche activity reported around the area. Some water ice has formed in the high country but overall itâ??s looking pretty boney in the mountains. We havenâ??t heard of many people scratching around in the alpine, except for a report of good mixed conditions on the South Howser Tower in the Bugaboos. Front range rock is still mainly dry, although there was a light dusting of snow down to 1800m in both Jasper and Rogers Pass yesterday.

Current forecasts show little in the way of snow or rain for the weekend with the exception of areas North of the Columbia Icefields. Most areas will see snow or rain on Monday and temperatures will certainly be cooler and more seasonal than they have been this past week. This will finally start the process of forming ice veneer on the regular ice routes. You might be able to sneak in a few rock routes in the front country this week, but other than that, head high or head South!
