The good news.....Spent a fun week climbing on the Wapta Icefields with generally sunny weather and easy travel conditions! Still lots of snow on the glaciers up high (1.5-2.5m) providing good bridging over most crevasses. Boot penetration was less than 10cm for most of the day.
Some things to keep in mind.....The melting really sped up over the week. No freezes for the past few nights (+12'C at 2400m at 0530 hrs yesterday) so the surface snow was staying moist. Rockfall, loose snow avalanches and cornices were a consideration, especially later in the morning. Also some thinner crevasse bridges were beginning to sag or give way. Creeks were flowing fast and deep on the way out as a result of the warm temps.
