ACMG Mountain Conditions Report Summary for the Rockies and Columbia Mountains issued September 27th, 2013

The ACMG Mountain Conditions Summary for the Rockies and Columbia Mountains issued September 27th, 2103

The summer is still over for the time being! Snow has receded from lower elevations in some places but it is still a fairly white world in the alpine.

Very few observations this past week but all point to there being just enough snow up high to make it tricky. Westerly winds moving the snow around today, especially on the east slope of the Rockies. Probably best to assume that any cornices would be new, crisp and weak.

There was talk of the season's 1st windslabs earlier this week. It is "unlikely" that there are widespread weak layers in the snow at this point-however,there has been the odd cold clear night that could conceivably have produced a weak layer in some steep alpine feature before some recent snowfall. In other words, remember to be careful about where you go on the steep snow until you have a real sense of its strength. It is a rough time of year to be bounced around by even a very small avalanche.

Glacier travel will be "interesting" with new snow on the dry ice and more than usual open crevasses and bergschrunds. Could be a good time to carry an avalanche probe to find exactly where those fluffy and useless new snowbridges begin and end.

May be some fine lean ice forming up high somewhere but it will almost all be brand new. It was very dry in the alpine gullies not long ago.

Nights are getting long and cold and the ground is damp. Remember your headlamp, don't be late for dinner and especially don't be late for breakfast!
