Kananaskis Public Safety thought it would be worthwhile to send out a reminder and update on snow conditions in the forecast region. If you've been following the bulletins at all, the October crust is no stranger. This layer and its associated depth hoar have been the failing layer on 6 avalanche involvements since November! Most of these avalanches have been at the high treeline elevation band, and moderately steep terrain (30-40 degrees).
The best defense against this layer is good terrain management and knowing what that layer is doing in your area. Don't be afraid to dig and have a look at the deeper layers out there. Have a safe holiday! Kananaskis Public Safety _______________________________________________ These observations and opinions are those of the person who submitted them.
