Whistler/Blackcomb has installed transceiver checkers at the Garibaldi Park
Boundaries on both the Blackcomb Glacier and Top of Flute. The Spearhead
Hut Committee with BC parks and W/B have also installed a people counter in the
same unit. It would be great if everyone going into the backcountry from
those areas travel past the checker/counter box. The statistics gathered
are super useful with backcountry use. Also it is a great message to
unprepared people if they see one place where everyone enters the
backcountry. A gate so to speak. That way unprepared people may
think twice about entering the backcountry without a transceiver, shovel and
probe. This is a great step in role modeling a backcountry responsibility
code. Tracks leaving the ski area in numerous places can be miss-leading
for skiers and riders who don’t realize that they may be leaving the
resort. When you approach the box it will display a Red X, when your transceiver is detected a Green O will display. Thanks for helping out.
See you in the hills, Chris.
