ACMG Mountain Conditions Report Summary for the Rockies and Columbia Mountains issued July 24, 2014

There has been a significant ?drying out? of the mountains over the past week.

Rocky Mountains:
Many of the alpine ice faces are bare of snow, with rockfall issues being reported in places such as Mount Athabasca North Face, Mount Andromeda, and Mount Lefroy West face. Bergschrunds are opening up and some reports have said it feels as dry as mid August already in the Icefields area. Mixed alpine routes such as Mount Assiniboine and the East Ridge of Temple are in good shape. The Parks Canada group of 4 bear restriction is in effect for the Moraine Lake area. Go to the Parks Canada website for more information on the restriction.

Alpine rock routes are generally dry with only the very highest North walls having wet corners.

Bugaboos/Rogers Pass:
These areas have similar issues of rockfall, as well as opening crevasses and bergschrunds, but most rock objectives are in condition to be climbed right now and people have been climbing all of the usual suspects.

We received a dusting of alpine snow in the Rockies today, but that shouldn't last long given the good forecast. The next week looks like a great one to be in the mountains with generally stable weather. You may be able to zip up an ice face this week with a good freeze and a ridiculously early start, but it will be more relaxing to climb sunny rock routes with a late start. Have fun.
