ACMG Mountain Conditions Report Summary for the Rockies and Columbia Mountains issued August 6, 2015

Wet and cool conditions have prevailed for the last couple of days, laying down some snow above 2600m in the Columbia Mountains, and 2800-2900m in the Rockies.

In both regions it has been a drier than average summer, resulting in bare ice or poorly bridged crevasses on glaciers into the high alpine. There are also plenty of areas with increased rockfall hazard as a result of the dry conditions. Ice face and gully routes are generally out of shape, except for the highest peaks such as Mount Robson. Recent reports there have found decent travel conditions with a good overnight freeze above 3000m, but very dry below.

It will take a couple of days of sunny weather this weekend to clean off any of the new snow on higher alpine routes. The forecast is looking generally good for the coming week, with the chance of some rain mid week. Id be looking for lower elevation rock climbing for the next couple days, or a very high alpine route where the new snow may actually help conditions in the short term. Once the snow clears off it will be a great summer to tackle those longer rock routes and ridges.
