ACMG Mountain Conditions Report Summary for the Rockies and Columbia Mountains issued August 13th, 2015

It is a dry world in the alpine these days. Lots of potential for alpine rock climbing and scrambling but as Grant Statham said in july, it is not a great summer for snow and ice routes. Some rain in the forecast but that won't improve conditions at all around and on the glaciers. I have recently been to a few familiar places where crevasses and bare ice are appearing under dirt and scree at the edges of glaciers where I have never even seen them before. Not a pretty sight.

Rockfall from pure rock faces is perhaps slightly less in this dry world(less water for the melt freeze cycle) but there is certainly more rockfall than usual from all the rock covered ice and the rot/melt going on at the glacier edges.

Creeks are low but there still seems to be water in most drainages in the main ranges.

Enjoy all that fine rock climbing(mainly by avoiding all the bad rock climbing:)and try and keep most of your snow and ice fantasies in check for now.
